Sart’s name is draconic and roughly translates as “small hunter of the golden flame.” He generally goes by Sart (small) which he hopes will help keep him humble. This is a misnomer though. While small in comparison to humans, Sart is large and stocky for a gnome. He is built more like a beefy halfling or a skinny dwarf.
Sart served as a blacksmith in a community comprised largely of Gnomes. This was the family business, blacksmithing and magic. The magic part bored him though, the theory was too cerebral. Instead he kept the bellows going, working on nails, shoes, tools, standard stuff needed by everyday people. Sart loves craft. He loves doing physical things. He’s always moving. He admires dedication, focus, and structure, particularly when mixed with sweat. These were all things he found in his craft.
Sart has his lighter side too. He has a passion for music. He likes its structure and order. The blending of harmony with melody. He’s certainly no trained performer, but he can carry a tune alright. His natural charisma helps him here a lot. He carries some musical pipes (tin whistles) with him. When common people are playing he likes to join in. He’ll bang on drums, tamborines, strum some on a lute, play his pipes or just sing. He’s proud of his voice which is deep for gnome.
In addition, Sart also has a love of animals. Maybe this comes partly from his natural ability to speak with animals once a day. He learned to handle animals fairly well, helping some with the training of dogs and horses.
With his passion for music, Sart might have become a bard. Like many of his race he enjoyed dabbling in a bit of everything. With his fondness of animals, he might have become a ranger or a druid. When a group of warriors and paladins dedicated to Iomedae came through his area, however, he asked to accompany them. They appealed to his desire for order and truth and meaning. They inspired him with their stories of action. More than anything Sart likes action. He offered to keep their horses shod and their weapons in good condition. In exchange he wanted to learn how to fight like them.
They agreed, and for a year Sart travelled with them, training under Mistress Lorande, and the others of her group, the Lady’s Riders. He began his training at the World Wound amongst crusaders. From there the traveled south through many lands to the city at the center of the world, to pay homage to Iomedae’s Ascension. The riders fought many battles, righted many wrongs. Sart watched and learned. At the end of two years of brutal training they said he was ready to pursue his own course if he wanted. Sart judged it a good time for a change.
With his own sword and war pony he seeks to challenge himself, to prove himself a noble warrior and to present himself as a model for others of the strength that comes with dedication, law and structure when it’s combined with compassion for others.
